Sergeant Harry Cyril Grove
Harry Cyril Grove was the son of Albert George Grove, a Taxi driver born in Bermondsey, and Alice Maud Worrall who was born in Kennington, London.
He was born in April 1911, in Lambeth, and appears to have been the youngest of 10 children (2 of whom died). According to the 1911 census, this large family was occupying 6 rooms, and Harry’s oldest sister, Alice was working as a waitress. 18 year old brother Albert was a tobacconist’s assistant and Frank, aged 15, was working in a warehouse.
Harry joined the RAF in May 1936. He was posted to No.3 Squadron at Wick in August 1940 and moved to No.501 at Kenley on 29th September. In an action near Sevenoaks on 8th November 1940 Grove was shot down and killed in Hurricane V6805, which crashed and burned out near Step Nett, Bradley Rd, Blackham.
Rest in peace Sir and thank you for your service.
