Chris Saxby's ATC Record of Service Book
Chris Saxby has kindly allowed us to add these photos of his Air Training Corps Record of Service book to the archive.
Chris remembers,
“I joined 450 Squadron Kenley in 1966 and left in 1972. I did a lot of gliding and flying in De Havilland Chipmunks.
Tuesday nights we did class room for the first half and drill in the old hangar for the second half.
Wednesday we were allowed to go to the cinema over the top of the NAAFI. Kenley was still occupied by the RAF at that time.
Thursday night we went swimming in Caterham barracks. I always remember coming out of the barracks blue with cold from that pool. Sometimes we were lucky to get a bag of chips from Mick’s chip shop.
Friday we did class room then football in the old gym.
Saturday we drilled with the ATC Band 18F. We did a lot of carnivals all around the area and shows.
First Sunday of the month we did shooting at Kenley rifle range and the rest of the weekends we helped with the gliding in hope we would get a flight. We did many other activities – no Play Stations in those days!”
