The local and national press covered the events of the 18th August 1940 for many weeks after the event; the impacts of the raid on the local area and people, the bravery of the armed forces, the civil defense and the people were not just interesting stories that sold newspapers – they were a chance to show national price and engage in boosting morale and scoring propaganda points over the enemy.
Here are just some of the press articles from that day. Notice that specific names of the airfields and locations are not mentioned. Some of the claims of German losses are also exaggerated.
