This quick release box comes from a Sutton Harness probably used in a fighter aircraft. It was found on Kenley Common by one of the City Commons Ranger Team.
This type was used from approximately 1946. It has “SER 14640/1” on the reverse.
The Sutton Harness held the pilot securely in the cockpit, with two shoulder straps and a lap belt. The box allowed the pilot to release the straps quickly in an emergency.
