We are indebted to Mike Jackson, nephew of Squadron Leader James Fielden Lambert for this collection of Royal Canadian Air Force photographs and subsequent articles which appeared in the press.
They appear to show 416 Squadron RCAF during the summer of 1943, when they were stationed at RAF Merston in Kent. Several Canadian fighter squadrons spent the summer of 1943 under canvas at Advanced Landing Grounds near the south coast learning to operate as a mobile units in preparation for D-Day.
The six original photos were sent to Jessie (S/Ldr. Lambert’s cousin) by his Mother, also called Jessie. The captions are glued to the bottom of the photos suggesting that they may have been displayed at some point.
These photos featured in at least two press articles – one on Mobile Airfields from an unknown publication and another entitled, “A Day in the Life of a Canadian Fighter Pilot in England,” which appeared in Canada’s Weekly on 15th October, 1943, which can be found in James Lambert’s RCAF service file.
Captions for the photos in the “Canada’s Weekly” article, 15th October, 1943, are as follows:
Top Row:
- Left: Two Canadians who fought together in the air over Malta, in their tent at an advanced Canadian airfield in England as a call comes through for an early morning briefing: F/O James F. Lambert (Winnipeg) who a few days later was appointed leader of a flight in the Wolf Squadron waking F/O Thurne Park (Oshawa, Ont)
- Centre: F/O Lambert and F/O Park having an early morning shave and wash outside their tent.
- Right: After breakfast F/O Lambert takes a bath in his collapsible canvas tub.
Second Row:
- Left: Blankets are taken from the tents for an airing on a picket fence.
- Right: F/O Park, grounded for a few days because of a cold, wishes good luck to F/O Lambert as he starts off for another sweep over France with a Canadian Fighter Wing in England.
Third Row:
- Left: S/L Campbell MacArthur (Winnipeg and Montreal), who has been mentioned in despatches for his medical work with Canadian pilots, examining F/O Lambert’s ear; even the slightest cold will affect a pilot’s eardrums and cause damage to them during the rapid ascents and descents which mark air manoeuvres and battles.
- Centre: F/O Park listens to an interrogation as F/O Lambert tells the leader of the Canadian Fighter Wing, W/C Hugh C. Godefroy DFC and Bar (Toronto) about a heavy “flak” area he has spotted during a sweep over France.
- Right: While grounded F/O Park goes shooting pheasants: in a couple of days he was back over enemy territory.
Bottom Row:
- Left: An English Sergeant cook, who formerly cooked at Eton College, pours tea for F/O Lambert and F/O Park in the Officers’ Mess.
- Centre: P/O N. B. Dixon (Sudbury, Ont) (right, foreground) shares two parcels addressed to him by his sister in the Womens’ Division of the RCAF in Canada. (Left to right) seated P/O P.A. McLachlan (Vancouver), P/O Park, P/O W.F. Cook (Clinton, Ont) F/O Lambert and in the rear row, P/O H. F. Packard (Montreal), S/L C. MacArthur (Winnipeg), former McGill University Rugby Captain, and P/O J. B. (Hamilton, Ont).
- Right: After a Fighter sweep over France during the day, three pilots arrive at a theatre in an English town, during the evening. (Right to Left) F/O Lambert (Winnipeg), F/L F. Leighton (Royston, B.C.), and P/O J. Bamford and a Canadian Medical Officer.
