“Everybody Welcome, Everything Free”
This leaflet gives helpful information about the Knights of Columbus Hospitality services available to Canadian personnel in London, especially when they are on leave. It includes a map of central London and a sightseeing list.
The leaflet explains:
“AUXILIARY SERVICES IN ENGLAND”
“The work of Auxiliary Services in England is carried on by the following organisations.”
- Knights of Columbus
- Canadian Legion
- Salvation Army
- Y.M.C.A.
“These four voluntary organisations have supervisors attached to most Army units and Air Stations so that you may be provided with recreation and entertainment. Each of these organisations are charged with the leadership in a special field.”
“The Knights of Columbus is charged with Hospitality.”
“KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CANADIAN ARMY HUTS”
“The Knights of Columbus in addition to providing all services in the field are also in charge of Leave Hospitality and Entertainment.
“Thousands of people in the United Kingdom have invited members of the Canadian Forces as guests during their period of leave. They offer you their homes and make you welcome while on leave. You are free to come and go as you please, the only responsibility you have is to act like a gentleman and a Canadian worthy of your uniform.
“When you go on leave let the Knights of Columbus make your arrangements.
“Why! because every part of England is overcrowded and unless arrangements are made in advance it is more than probable that the man on leave will have to sleep on a park bench, especially in the larger centres such as London, Glasgow, Edinburgh.
“Where. Some of you may have relatives or friends with whom to spend your leave, but most of you will have to decide for yourselves where to go and what to do. The K. of C. bureau can advise you as to the best places in which to do the things you like best in the easiest way.”
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic organisation founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. Their work continues to this day.
