This leaflet was issued by the Ministry of Home Security in 1941, and written by Mrs. Creswick Atkinson R.R.C. (Welfare Advisor to London Regional Headquarters).
It details how to make a garden shelters, public shelters and Indoor shelters more comfortable as well as safe ways of providing heating and lighting etc.
This is followed by a section on precautions that can be taken to prevent injury from shattered window glass.
How to prepare your house before leaving for the air raid shelter is detailed eg. turning off the gas and electricity at the mains and leaving doors unlocked.
There is a list of what should be taken to the shelter and instructions on how to make a sleeping bag.
The importance of keeping a routine for children is emphasised (eg. saying their prayers before bed) and learning their name and address off by heart. Also, that they mustn’t play with anything strange that they find after a raid.
Incendiary bombs and gas are discussed at length before moving on to the ‘Housewives Service’ to make practical and morale-boosting links between housewives. How to deal with Air raid damage, pets and first aid concludes the leaflet.
This pamphlet belonged to Mr. L. Ridley of Upper Selsdon Rd, Sanderstead, and comes from the collection of Robin Grainger.
